Getting from Orlando airport (MCO) to Champions Gate, including car hire and tolls
After a long flight from the UK, the last thing you want is a stressful drive. The good news is that the journey from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Champions Gate is simple once you know the way. Here's what to expect.
How far is it?
Champions Gate is roughly 27–32 miles from MCO, depending on the route. In normal traffic that's usually 35–45 minutes. Allow more time at rush hour, and if you're arriving in the evening, factor in the time it takes to clear immigration and collect your car.
Collecting your hire car
Most families staying with us hire a car, and we'd recommend it. The parks, the supermarkets and the restaurants are all a drive away.
At MCO the main hire companies have desks at the airport itself:
- Terminals A and B: rental desks and car collection are on the levels marked for rental cars (R1/R2), next to the main terminal building.
- Terminal C: the newer terminal has its own rental car areas in the Terminal C parking garage.
Some companies are based off-airport and run free shuttle buses from the ground transportation level of each terminal. Check your booking confirmation to see where your company is, and follow the signs for Rental Cars or Ground Transportation.
Before you leave the desk, it's worth:
- Checking the car for damage and photographing it
- Making sure child seats are fitted correctly (Florida law requires them for young children)
- Asking how tolls are charged on your rental (see below)
- Setting your sat nav or phone to your villa address while you're still parked
The usual route: SR 417 and I-4
The route most sat navs and local directions recommend is:
- Leave the airport on the south exit and join SR 417 South (the Central Florida GreeneWay). This is a toll road.
- Follow SR 417 south and west until it meets I-4.
- Take I-4 West for a few miles, past the Disney exits.
- Leave at exit 58 for Champions Gate.
From the exit it's only a few minutes to the resort gates.
The toll-free alternative is to stay on I-4 the whole way, but I-4 through Orlando is often congested. After a long flight, most people find the toll road worth it.
Paying tolls in a hire car
Orlando has a lot of toll roads, and many toll points are now cashless, so you can't always pay with coins at a booth. You have a few options:
- Your hire company's toll programme. Most hire companies offer a toll scheme where the tolls you use are billed back to your card, often with a daily or per-rental admin fee. The terms vary a lot between companies, so ask at the desk and read the agreement.
- Visitor Toll Pass. This is a free temporary hangtag for hire car customers flying in and out of MCO. You reserve it in its app, collect it from a machine in the terminal, and pay the tolls you actually use. You need to return it at the airport at the end of your trip, or a fee applies. If you use it, decline the hire company's toll programme so you aren't billed twice. Check the Visitor Toll Pass website for which hire companies it works with and the current terms.
- SunPass. Florida's own toll account can be linked to a hire car's number plate in some cases. It's mainly useful for frequent visitors. See sunpass.com.
Whatever you choose, sort it before you drive away. Unpaid tolls on a hire car can come back to you later with admin fees on top.
Arriving late or not driving
If you're landing late at night and don't fancy driving straight away, or you'd rather not hire a car for the whole trip, there are other options from the airport's ground transportation level, including taxis, ride-share apps and pre-booked private transfers. Prices vary by time and demand, so get a quote in advance. If you have young children, check that your transfer can provide suitable car seats.
Our tips for arrival day
- Keep it simple. Pick up the car, do a quick food shop on the way in (there's a Publix in Champions Gate), then swim and get an early night.
- Download offline maps before you fly, in case your phone takes a while to connect.
- Have the villa address ready to type into the sat nav at the car park, not on the motorway.
- Watch for the exits. Florida's motorways can have exits on the left as well as the right, so use a sat nav with lane guidance.
- Drive on the right, and remember that turning right on a red light is often allowed after a full stop, unless a sign says otherwise.
Heading home
For your return trip, simply reverse the route: I-4 East from exit 58, then SR 417 North to the airport. Allow plenty of time for returning the car, the shuttle bus if your company is off-airport, and security. Don't forget to return your Visitor Toll Pass hangtag if you used one.
