Disney World tips for families staying off-site

Staying in a villa rather than a Disney hotel? Practical tips on driving, parking, early starts, Lightning Lane, Rider Switch and rest days.

Disney World tips for families staying off-site

Lots of families visit Walt Disney World while staying in a holiday home rather than a Disney hotel, and with a little planning it works brilliantly. You get more space, a kitchen and a pool to come home to, and from Champions Gate the Disney parks are only about 11–13 miles away. Here's how to make it easy.

What's different when you stay off-site?

Disney offers some extras to guests in its own resort hotels (and some selected partner hotels). For example, there's a period of early theme park entry, and there are differences in how far ahead you can book some services. These benefits change from time to time, so check the current details on the official Walt Disney World website rather than relying on older blogs.

The flip side is that off-site, you have:

Getting there and parking

From Champions Gate you take I-4 east to the Disney exits. Typical drive times are around 20–30 minutes to EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs, and a bit longer to Magic Kingdom's car park.

Get there early

Off-site or on-site, arriving before the park opens is the single best way to beat the queues. The first hour or so is usually the quietest of the day.

Lightning Lane and the My Disney Experience app

Disney's paid Lightning Lane options let you book a return time for some attractions and use a shorter queue. The rules, prices and booking windows (including how far ahead off-site guests can book) change from time to time, so read the official Lightning Lane page before your trip.

Whatever you decide, download the My Disney Experience app before you travel and link your tickets. You can use it for:

Rider Switch

If you have a little one who's too small for a ride, use Rider Switch. One adult rides while the other waits with the child, then you swap without queuing twice. Ask a Cast Member at the ride entrance, and check the official page for how it currently works.

The mid-day break

This is where staying in a villa really shines. Parks are hottest and busiest in the early afternoon. Many families:

  1. Arrive at opening and enjoy the quietest hours
  2. Head back to the villa around lunchtime for a swim and a rest
  3. Return to the park in the evening, refreshed, for the night-time shows

Check your parking ticket rules before you leave and come back, and remember that afternoon I-4 traffic can add time.

Food and drink

Pace yourselves

Disney parks are big, and children (and grown-ups) tire quickly in the Florida heat. We'd suggest:

Disney Springs

Disney Springs, Disney's shopping and dining area, doesn't need a park ticket. It's a nice evening out for food, shops and people-watching, and it's only about 20–30 minutes from Champions Gate.

Check before you go

Ticket prices, park hours, parking charges, Lightning Lane rules and hotel-guest benefits all change, so please check the official Walt Disney World website (disneyworld.disney.go.com) for the latest information before you book or travel.
